Potted Plants for your Outdoor Living Spaces

There is little better in life than a cozy patio full of lush plant life, comfortable furniture, and décor that represents the elegant home you have curated.

While furniture and décor are easy additions, many people forget to add plant life to their patio spaces. According to Texas A&M University, studies show that people who spend time cultivating plants have less stress in their lives. Plants soothe human beings and provide a positive way for people to channel their stress into nurturing.

While you don't need to be a master gardener (maybe someday!), you can start with some easy-to-manage, low-maintenance plants to start filling your patio with life.

Not sure where to start? Here are some of the best low-maintenance potted plants to infuse your patio with life.

The Best Low Maintenance Potted Plants

We get it, life is busy. You don't have time to tend to your potted plants every day (or even every week). At the same time, you also don’t want your patio to be a barren, lifeless place.

The solution? Invest in a variety of low-maintenance potted plants.

Outdoor Experts has put together our top six low-maintenance potted plants for you to consider. Keep reading to find the perfect fit for your patio.

Heucheras

Heucheras

Deep purples, salmon pinks, forest greens, heucheras offer a little bit of everything with low maintenance.

Also called coral bells, this plant is a slow-growing, low-maintenance plant that comes in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Heucheras grow spikes in late spring and early summer than many plant owners choose to remove. However, it’s up to you! Who knows, the prickly spikes might just suit your style.

Geraniums

Geraniums

Another of our personal favorites, geraniums provides your patio with a classic and colorful flower with little need for maintenance.

They do need six hours of sunlight per day, but in return, they reward you with a heavenly aroma.

The best thing about geraniums is that they are great for learning basic gardening skills. Why? They thrive with little to no care but will do even better if you deadhead and fertilize them regularly.

Begonias

Begonias

Begonias are a perfect match for patio life as they thrive in shade and provide a compelling splash of color to any space.

For begonias to thrive all you need to do is keep their soil moist and keep them in constant shade.

Not only that, but they love humidity. If humidity levels drop below 10% hose these plants liberally, and they will thrive.

Caladium

Caladium

Why let flowers get all the attention? If you want leaves that really pop, caladium is the way to go. The leaves range from a pink center with green edges, to purple, white, green, and crimson.

They are so striking that many people mistake them for fakes.

Most species of caladium prefer full shade and higher humidity, so be sure to keep the top layer of soil moist.

They do love the heat, so caladium is a plant made for summer. Once nighttime temperatures drop below 60 degrees F, it's time to bring them in for the year.

Dichondra Argentea

Dichondra Argentea

Dichondra Argentea is one of our personal favorites, though you might know it better as silver ponyfoot.

A native to the southwest US, this plant offers striking silver foliage and grows quickly with a small amount of attention. It's a quick grower too! You will fast find that your silver ponyfoot has cascaded over the edge of its container, creating an almost mystical effect.

Before careful though! Silver ponyfoot isn’t meant for cold Ohio winters! Be sure to bring it indoors when the weather grows cold!

Angelonia Serena

Angelonia Serena

Angelonia Serena, there's a name we could say all day and never grow tired over it. Beautiful as the name is, this plant might be more striking to look at.

Crowned with delicate pink and purple flowers, this plant (sometimes called the summer snapdragon) is hard to kill and needs very little effort to thrive.

Angelonia Serena can withstand high levels of heat and humidity, meaning it is an ideal summer plant.

The flowers are fragrant and add a splash of color to your patio space.
